NURSING THEORY APPLICATION TO NURSE STAFFING2

Applying Nursing Theory to the Problem of Nurse Staffing

Nursing theories offer a conceptual basis for nursing practice. Theories are formed from

deductive and inductive reasoning and provide an infrastructure designed to support nursing

practice, support quality patient care and outcomes and are composed of concepts, definitions,

model and propositions. Challenging nursing situations can be undertaken by applying nursing

theory through research and education. Jean Watson’s theory of human caring can be applied to

practice problems with beneficial outcomes. These impact of these theories must be examined to

determine the effect on nurse staffing in a hospital or acute setting.

Jean Watson, PHD, RN, AHC-BC, FAAN is widely known for her theory of human

caring. The major concepts found in this theory are based on the thought that heart and

fundamentals of nursing are founded in caring science (Watson, 2008). The primary expression

of caring is classified by mutual intercommunication. This mutual reciprocity is a reflection of

our humanity in others and is not necessarily limited by spatial, physical or time constraints

(Watson, 2008). Watson believed that caring and curing harmonized with the medical field and

were integral parts of professional nursing.

Watson’s theory focuses on genuinely caring for the whole person; mind, body and spirit

to promote optimal healing. She believed her theory to be ever evolving that would allow nurses

to not only provide better care for their patients but also for their own well-being and that of their

coworkers.

This paper will primarily focus on Watson’s theory of human caring and the integral role

it has in relation to nurse staffing. Including a review of literature, this paper will address the
